Krista Hill, our director, and Chris Evans, director of Prairie Gold Chorus and our coach for this year, all dressed up in contest finery. Don't they look grand!
In 1996 a group of women who love to sing together joined under the direction of Sheryl Brook to learn the craft of singing barbershop music. As word spread, the membership grew. Women came because of the music and the harmony and stayed because of the music and the harmony and the people. In 2000 the group became a charter member of Sweet Adelines International and adopted the name River Hills Chorus. We steadily learned how to improve our sound and enjoyed the friendship and support of the other women.
Time marches on and after some years a job change meant that Sheryl must move to Stettler. It was hard to see her go, but the chorus was determined to continue and were able to do so under the direction of Krista Hill. It has been wonderful! Krista is amazing and we keep on learning together.
Each year we begin rehersals in September and continue until June. During the months of July and August there are no rehersals. There have been performances at the Stampede festivities, at lodges and nursing homes, in churches, at music festival, Canada Day (in the rain)
at Christmas parties and special events. The chorus members put on performances of Nunsense and Nunsense 2 as fundraisers.
In 2002, 2004, 2007, and 2009 River Hills participated in Regional Competitions as required by the International charter. We got valuable feedback from the judges comments on how to continue getting better and better at our craft. At the last contest in Calgary in April 2009, we were pleased to inprove our score over the previous contest. We got to hear the other choruses from the region which covers British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
What keeps us coming back year after year? There are a lot of things.... THE MUSIC, THE LEARNING, THE FRIENDSHIP, THE HARMONY. We are a diverse group of women, of all ages and from several communites. New members are always welcome. You are welcome to come and see if we might be a good fit for you.
